Boy Bands, iPods, & Ramen Noodles: Meet the Dresser That’s Seen It All

Wassup, peeps! Remember when the millennium was still brand new? Ah, that was the life… The good ole days when iPods were all the rage and denim was the only material hotter than me!

Yes, the early 2000’s were a special time. I started my very first job just a year after the turn of the century and wow, time has flown by ever since.

Who am I, you ask?

Oh, where are my manors? Let me introduce myself: I’m a sturdy 4-drawer dresser, but my friends call me “chest.” I know what you’re thinking… You’re a chest

If we’re being honest, I like to think of myself as much more than that. Not to brag, but I’m part of a larger collection. I come with a desk and TWO chairs, and our joinery is some of the best on the market! I know my roommates count on me to be reliable and strong for them, so I take my job very seriously.

I live and work on The Hill at Auburn University—though I expect to move locations soon because they’ve made plans to demolish my building. But don’t be sad for me, I’m pumped about all that lies ahead! I just can’t help but reflect on how far I’ve come in the process…

Looking back on 20+ years of service

I was first installed in November 2001. Since then, I’ve worked for 42 roommates. In college time, that’s 21 years of service!

I’ve spent more than two decades supporting students in their studies, listening to boy bands and Britney Spears (she really doesn’t go out of style, does she?) and watching technology evolve from flip phones into tiny, hand-held robots.

Sometimes I catch myself getting jealous over how much time my roommates spend with their robot devices. There’s so much more we could do together if they’d chillax with the tech! But I know they still value me. We’ve been through so much together…

Saturday morning movies, parents’ weekends (the ‘rents are always heavier than my roomies but my chairs are built to last!), and late night study sessions with the smell of Ramen noodles in the air… I remember it all like it was yesterday.

Other hardworking pieces in my set (including a pedestal desk, two-position chair, and adjustable height bed) get a little more “dressed up” by our roomies.

The journey ahead…

I’ve seen a lot in my days. From tragedies like 9/11, an event that has stayed with us all, to countless Tigers wins and even a National Championship (thanks, Cam Newton)!

But despite all of this life already lived, I do believe the best is yet to come… New roomies with new interests and brand new goodies to fill my drawers! In the wise words of Smash Mouth, the years keep coming and they really don’t stop coming. So much to do, so much to see…

If the years ahead are anything like the past two decades of service, I know I’m in for a wonderfully bumpy ride… but I can take it. After all, it’s what I was built for!

That’s all I’ve got for now. The university likes me in tip-top shape for each new semester, so I’m off to get a cleaning. I’m so excited I can hardly keep my drawers shut!

Thanks for letting me reflect on a great journey so far. I can’t wait to share more memories with you as I settle into my new home and create new memories!

As always… War Eagle!
